Who The Hell Are You?
Lori
Garbacz and Larry Machia (Burfeindt Larry) were a volatile pair. Neither
one would back down in a confrontation, especially between themselves.
Larry was a great caddie but Lori was very hesitant on accepting advice. One
year during the first round of the Big Apple Classic, played at Wykagyl
Country Club in New Rochelle NY, everything came to a head. They started
on the back nine but by the 18th hole, their 9th, sparks were starting
to fly. They
were arguing the full length of the hole, a par 5, and while approaching
the green Larry couldn't take it any more. He decided to quit! Now
Larry wasn't the type of caddie to just drop the bag in the fairway and
walk off but in this situation he had an ace in the hole by the name of
Frank Daugherty. Frank
was a good friend of Larry's and was following his group that day. A
Boston cabby and club caddie, Frank new his way around a golf course and
would have no trouble taking Larry's place. That was the plan. Larry
called Frank onto the fairway, gave him his caddie bib, yardage book and
Lori's golf bag and sent him on his way. Frank
caught up to Lori at the green but, since she had not yet turned around,
did not know about the switch. Out of the corner of her eye an
unfamiliar figure approached. Turning, she confronted the stranger.
"Who the hell are you?" she asked. "I'm your new
caddie" Frank responded. Now
Frank was a character himself. He would say anything to anyone without
consequence. Lori did not intimidate him in the least. Going
onto the back nine Frank started getting the yardage. Now this is a guy
Lori did not know but she didn't blink an eye. She just let him do his
job. On
the tenth hole, a long par 4, She made an eagle 2! It seemed a new team
had been born. On the 15th though her second shot came up short of
the green and she questioned Frank's yardage. Without hesitation Frank replied
"Hey look, the same feet that walked the yardage when you made that
eagle walked this one. It's right!" So
goes another chapter in the life of The Garb. Return
