Mr.
Potato Head
Tom Hanson
has caddied for a few years on the LPGA tour. He is also an accomplished
sports journalist who has written for sports magazines and newspapers.
He even did a live call in spot on some radio
stations. Unfortunately his nickname in "Doofus", rhymes with
Rufus, which he despises. He even threatened to sue me after finding out
I used it in the Caddie Nicknames page on this site.
In 2001 we
played The City of Hope Classic at Wilshire C.C. in Los Angeles.
The 12th hole is a medium length par 3 playing 165 yards. It lies right
at the corner of the golf course property and is lined with an
apartment complex. Most of the time it's fairly quite but occasionally
noises drift onto the course. This was one of those times.
Tom was
working for Gail Graham. They arrived on the 12th and some distracting
music was emanating from an apartment, where a man was sitting, close to
the tee . Tom asked if he would turn the music down and he complied.
After everyone hit they walked off the tee directly in front of the the
gentleman's abode. The obviously annoyed man looked at Tom and said "Hey
potato head, don't tell me what to do in my own house!".
Later, Tom
recollected the story and informed his roommate. After deep deliberation
he decided, if the choice was available, he would much rather be called
"Potato Head".
This is
just one example how a caddie might acquire a nickname. It may not be
the one you prefer but in many instances the choice is out of your
hands. For more
caddie and player nicknames check the links on the home page.
Hope I
don't get sued for this story. If any lawyer out there would like to
represent me pro bono drop me a line.
