Eagle Squared
We were
playing the S&H Golf Classic, circa 1985, at the Pasadena Yacht
and Country Club in St. Petersburg Florida and I was toting for Gail-Lee
Hirata. Our pairing that day was Cathy Mant and LeAnn Cassaday.
We arrived
at the fourth hole without much fanfare. The fourth was a fairly short
hole with a bunker right and a reachable lake to the left. The
lake stretched all the way to a narrow figure eight green which slopes
away and toward the water. The pin was set on the very front and difficult to approach. The safe play was hit to the pin, let the ball
release and putt back to the hole.
Gail-Lee's
tee ball went into the left rough, LeAnn's was center cut and Cathy's
found the right trap. First to play was Cathy. She caught the ball clean
and it was right on target. Landing a few steps short of the green it
took two hops rolled on the green and into the hole!
LeAnn
was next. Her approach landed on the front of the green and rolled
to the back. Now it was our play. We were in between clubs. The seven
iron would land on the green but, like LeAnn's shot, would roll to the
back. The eight would land short.
Gail-Lee
preferred the seven. If the eight stayed short it would be a very
difficult chip shot. After watching Cathy's ball I knew the eight had a
good chance to bounce up. I told Gail-Lee "You have to play it just
like Cathy. Let's go with the eight.
It should land short bounce up and go into the hole." That last
part was just to give her a little more confidence.
Well you
guessed it! That's just what she did. The shot was an exact duplicate of
Cathy's. Golf history was made. Two eagles, on the same par four, in the
same group!
