Life on Tour

Dream On

I started to caddy back in 1978 at the tournament in Rancho Bernardo CA. The next week was the Colgate Dinah Shore in Palm Springs. I showed up in hopes of being assigned a player, not knowing that it was a very limited field. The chance of getting a job was about nil, but what did I know. This was my 2nd week on tour.

The caddy master asked me if I wanted to go nine holes. Kathy Postlewait's caddy wasn't there yet and she wanted to get in a little practice.

We played nine and got along very well. She said a friend was going to work for her but wanted to make sure he was coming. If he wasn't going to show I could have the job.

He was a no show, so Tuesday we played a 18 hole practice round. After the round we went to the range and proceeded to beat balls. I noticed a man watching her. He was a curious looking fellow, his first few shirt buttons undone exposing a "Mr. T." like display of gold chains. He seemed like someone you run into in Las Vegas, not at a golf tournament.

He called her over and had a fairly long discussion. To my surprise, she comes back and hands me $200.00. You have to remember this was 1978. $200.00 was well above the going rate on tour. He told her he had a dream that he caddied for her and they won the tournament. He was willing to pay me off and work free of charge. How can you beat that deal! I couldn't believe I made $200.00 for 27 holes of work. Welcome to the tour.

By the way, Sandra Post won the tournament not Postlewait! At least he got it half right.
