My player this week is A. J. Eathorne

Monday: Walked the course early but nothing has changed. Worked the qualifier for Natalie Tucker but the lack of birdies spoiled her chances of playing this week. In fact, it took 13 holes, a combined 39 holes between the three in our group, to make the first bird. The other two didn't qualify either.

  • Betsy King has rejoined our traveling circus after a two week hiatus. Her time off wasn't spent in a frivolous manner but on safari in Tanzania. Her party of four visited three different parks escorted by their  own personal guide.

  • In the never say never department; Tex is back on Wendy Doolan's sack after their tumultuous breakup at the end of last season and Rick Reid is toting for Amy Alcott after getting stiffed by her in Vegas. Seems Amy has a radio show called GolfChix and will not play next week due to a commitment to the show.

  • Jane Geddes made an appearance last week in Corning in between a quest for her law degree. She currently has two years credit under her belt.

  • I apologize for any lack of response to your emails. It's enough of a burden for Wilkesie to loan his laptop for my updates. Hogging it for surfing and email would be a bit too much.

Tuesday: A. J. is a it under the weather so a 10 hole practice round was more then enough. We played with Christie Kerr, the defending champion, and at one point had to ask her caddie, Worth, what was the par for this course.

  • When we were in New Rochelle, a local sports writer noted that Danielle Amiee had more false fronts than Wykagyl!
  • One nice touch about the Corning Classic is that the caddie master and his staff does their best to fulfill our needs. The keg, hidden in the bag room for our consumption, was their crowning glory.

Wednesday: A. J. was still fighting her cold but managed to get through the pro-am. First time I can remember our group making three eagles. Still finished eleven under though. The cold weather nixed any attempt for an afternoon practice session.

  • We morn the passing of former LPGA caddie Chuck Burkey (Chucky Love). Heard he passed away a few months back due to liver and kidney failure.
  • Woody's player, Jung Yeon Lee, has changed her name back to her birth name Sara. Sara Lee? He now calls her 'Cupcake'.

Thursday: A. J. was going to be a little late so she called to let me know. Just before hanging, up she asked if I would like anything. Since it was another cold and nasty day day, I jokingly requested a hot bowl of soup. Thirty minutes later she arrived carrying a container of Campbell's chicken noodle in a microwaveable container. What a peach!

  • McGettigan's 19th Hole is a favorite watering-hole, of caddies and players alike, and couldn't be situated in a better location. Just outside the course property adjacent to the first tee. Great food and all your favorite adult beverages. My selection for today was a grilled Ruben and fries washed down with a couple of amber lagers.

Friday: By far the most miserable day on a golf course I've ever spent. Pelted the whole way by rain and wind but the greens never went under. Carded a +3 round and earned every bit of it.

  • Good and bad news arrived this morning. My laptop was fixed but sent to last week's motel. Managed to get it rerouted to next weeks' abode The Red Roof Inn. I left them specific instructions to call me for the address but what do you expect from "customer non-service".

  • Our volunteer scorer was in quite a tizzy early on. He didn't realize we started on the back nine and the holes weren't matching with the par. Since we were on the tube, ESPN was on his butt to get it right. He eventually corrected his mistake.

  • I realize Isabelle Beisiegel takes a healthy cut at it but bringing in a new ball on every hole seems a bit over the top. Add the extra six she packs for 'emergencies' and it starts to add up but her hubby looks in good shape so what's a few extra pellets.

  • Thursday's weather brought out a variety of garb as displayed below.

Saturday: Got the wrong end of the flop this week. We started off with a heavy mist just short of turning into a light drizzle. The afternoon was crystal clear. Shot one under and made the cut with ease. It's been a while since I've last worked for A. J. and she has developed quite an excellent short game with the tutelage of Lisa Kiggens. Super soft hands and great imagination.

Sunday: Went "shrimp'n" (hard right to left shots in the shape of a shrimp) all day and it took its toll. Ballooned to a disappointing +4. If A. J. could ever keep it in the short stuff we may have a new first time winner.

  • Could be the worst caddie treatment on tour. Larry Harrison, the tournament director, must not give us a second thought. They even closed the caddie tent early on cut day and the guys who missed it had to come back on Sunday for their towel and bib deposits.
